Turbo Tax and Liver update

March 20th, 2011 at 02:53 pm

Happy Spring!

Thanks to everyone for your support on my sister's new liver. It's working and she will be out of the hospital soon I hope. Special thanks to those of you who signed your organ donation cards after my posts.

On another note, has anyone used Turbo tax to file? I've been paying an accountant for the last several years and I'm thinking maybe I should do my taxes myself. Do these software packages make it easy if I have a) a dependent family member who gets a disability tax credit, and 2) a student with education deductions? Let me know your thoughts. I have last years forms from my accountant that I can follow as a secondary check to make sure I'm in line with previous returns.

I have used Turbo Tax and yes, they should be able to accomodate your needs. The nice thing with the online versions where you just go to the website is that you can start them for free and only pay if you need to print or are ready to file. I would definitely try it!

Glad to hear your sister is doing better!

I haven't used Turbo Tax, but I would encourage you to give up the pricey accountant and do your own taxes, with or without the software.

I was in your shoes many years ago and then i just got tired of paying $300 for my rather simple taxes. Provided that your tax situation doesn't change much from ojne year to the next, I found that it was very helpful when I did my taxes myself (using just the IRS booklet) to have my previous year's return in front of me, the way the accountant did it. I could compare line by line to make sure I wasn't drastically changing anything aside from the actual numbers.

    Good luck!

I used turbotax a few years ago but switched to TaxAct.

I found their online "interview" was more indepth then turbotax'.

My taxes are not that complicated, but with DW's student loan and some unemployment she recieved, TaxAct sort of reminded me about things I had forgotten I could deduct.

Another added plus, only 17.95$ for both state and fed online filings.

Both TaxAct and turbotax are both better options for an average person, in my opinion. Unless your Buffet or Gates.

I have a blog post about this -
Try freetaxusa.com $10 for both state and federal for me. TurboTax online would have cost me $110.

I would agree...find a software that will be the least expensive to file.

Thanks for your input folks. I'm from Canada so I'll have to stick with one of the 13 sw packages that are approved by Rev Canada.

With a limited offering available, then, that will just lead to a quick review of the costs and benefits of each. I am sure that you will find one that will offer you insurance of a smooth filing and quick return (assuming you get a return, I mean!).
