POST RECESSION CHRISTMAS?

September 21st, 2009 at 04:14 am

According to the Government of Canada we are now out of the recession. Certainly the job boards are showing many more postings for part time and full time jobs. My mother, long passed, was born in 1924 and lived through the Great Depression. She could feed a family of 6 for very little. She once told me she sent my Dad to the butcher to buy 10 cents worth of liver for dinner. It made me think that a post recession Christmas dinner would be a blast. Layered jello (red and green), peanut brittle (one pound sugar, one pound butter, and a hand full of peanuts if we could afford it). Jello with coleslaw, mac and cheese (before cheese was expensive), popcorn.

We could augment the meal with Spam, bean salad, rice pudding, canned cocktail weenies. Any other ideas that could add to the festivities? I'll update you when my extended family responds to my post recession Christmas suggestion!

Are those foods that hold special memory for your family?

My mother was born in 1907, my father in 1899. I think i learned my frugal ways from them, especially my mother. They always paid cash for everything.

Joan: Mostly the peanut brittle. A lot of the other stuff is just associated with the 1960's when I was young.

We raised our own food growing up, so we would probably have a turkey that was in the freezer and raid the root cellar for green beans, corn, potatoes and squash. We were blessed to have lived on a 32 acre farm that had an apple orchard, cherry tree, raspberry bushes, grape vines, pear tree, chickens (eggs), cows (milk), honey bees for honey and a 1/2 acre garden, which my mom would can like a mad lady come harvest time. Loved it and try to do a lot of the same things myself.
