Why getting several quotes is important

We have a dead tree in our yard. We called 4 companies for quotes. All of the people we called are insured. For the removal of one dead birch tree quotes were $700, $525, $450, and $350. They all agreed to take the wood. I can't figure out why there is such a variation. The least expensive guy was the most professional. Guess who I'm hiring?

    It might be how many people are doing the job. If it's one guy with a chainsaw, that's going to be different than 2 or 3 guys doing the job quickly. Also it may have to do with disposing of the wood. Since the tree is dead, it is likely rotten inside, meaning that it can't be burned and it's probably no good for chipping (plus if I remember right birch trees resprout from chips anyway) and since you really can't burn rotten wood well, there is no resale value in the wood and it will have to be dumped. If they have a cheap place to dispose of it,(their own land) it would cost less than if they have to take it somewhere to dispose of it.

    LuckyRobin - the birch tree died of birch worm disease which is easily transferred to other trees. Therefore it has to be removed and burned to ensure it doesn't transfer to other birches.

    Oh, then they shouldn't have trouble burning it then. But again, do they have a place to burn it, or do they have to take it to someone else's burn pile, will make a differnce in disposal costs.

    This is something that so many people will not take the time to do, even when it could lead to great savings. Asking around for quotes works equally well for stuff like insurance and also for yard work like this. I hope that they get rid of the pests that killed the tree!
