Creative Way to Find Money #2

June 18th, 2009 at 01:29 am

Did you know that there is unclaimed money in bank accounts? We strangely found more than $2,000 in an unknown account just by googling "unclaimed accounts" or "unclaimed money". We typed in my DH's name and up it popped. We applied for the funds and heard nothing for 60 days. Then I did a courtesy call to the bank and received a call 24 hours later that it was indeed intended for my husband. We have no clue where this money came from unless it was sent to the wrong bank in error. So we received the cheque and are still wondering about it. In Canada these dormant accounts are handled by the Bank of Canada. Sure, some are only for a few buck, but it's tax free and it's yours. And hey, send me 10% as a commission (just kidding!!!). Have fun and let me know if you have any success.

I keep meaning to tell my Dad he has money in three accounts in my state. He used to live here. I think one was a bank account he left open during his move and the others are deposits held by utilities that he should have asked for when he closed his accounts. These show up when I run the state search for unclaimed money. Some for a deceased aunt show up, too. Nothing for me, though. Wink

My wife found out that there were a few hundred dollars in her name in our home state recently, but getting access to it leads to a challenge since we are living overseas right now! Still, it is nice to have some insurance that the money is there and that we can find it when we return to the States. Great tip!
